Not exactly Ober the moon

Zut alors! The recruitment focus on players of French extraction shows no signs of stopping, with Alan Pardew's revelation that Man Utd winger Gabriel Obertan is set to join the club today, pending a medical, for a fee rumoured to be around £3m.

Feel free to correct me if you know any different, but Obertan has never once looked remotely decent any time I've witnessed him in action for the Red Devils, so it's mind-boggling that we're prepared to compromise our parsimony and shell out a sizeable fee for someone who can't seem to cut it even on the very outer fringes of a Premier League squad.

Rather more welcome is the news that Michael Richardson has been sent out to Leyton Orient on loan. The rookie midfielder - 19 years old, though the photo accompanying the BBC story would suggest he's barely into his teens - has made a great impression since signing from Walker Central last summer and will benefit from first-team action with Orient, a club looking up who are in with a realistic shout of escaping League One.

He had a very good game in the champions league I can't rember the team he was playing agaisnt but he scored and set up one. I have a feeling we may be suprised at the quality of this lad.

i think if the rumours are true and that he does sign it may be worth giving him a chance before slating him and trying to influence people's opinion of him. remember forlan for manchester united, flop and old trafford and then went on to greatness. so im not correcting you for being wrong. but i do hope you are and i wish people who write these articles would give people a chance before getting the daggers out!

Sir,
I think you are being a little unfair on Msr Obertan.
To say that he is no good, based on an inability to get into the ManUre team, is wrong. He has faced competition for that spot from Nani, Ronaldo &, Valencia so him not featuring is not a surprise. One of our best players, Jose Enrique, would not have featured ahead of Evra so is he also "not remotely decent"?
It is the difference between being good enough for ManUre and good enough for the Premier League. Sadly, these are two completely different things.
I hope.

Gabriel obertan will be a revelation for us this season i can feel it!! he has pace, skill, strength, scores goals , creates goals, good passer of the ball, he's keen to prove what he can do, all this for 3 million and still only 22.if we can get him happy and keep him happy he WILL definately deliver for US !! he played at international level for 16's 17's 18's 19's and 21's and just needs to regain some confidence by getting games. one thing i have noticed is he has been wearing the no9 shirt all pre season for man u reserves. he is not a prolific goal scorer by any shout and as long as pardew doesn't give him that shirt in black and white we have a diamond in this lad. fingers crossed all medical and paperwork go through ok!!

The assessment was based on my own experience of watching him (when he gets a game) and that of Man Utd fans I've talked to - but, in the interests of balance, I should add that the other half of Black & White & Read All Over is rather more enthusiastic about the deal, while of course I'd be more than happy to be proved wrong!
